David says "American Eagle & Silver Bar"
Funny story. Makes me wish I was going there for my vacation. Also, curious to me is where exactly you found that silver bar. If I am not mistaken the JM on it stands for Johnson Mathey. That is not signifigant in any way, but I thought it funny to see because my father-in-law works for Johnson Mathey. He has once gave me a silver bar with the same logo stamped on it.

Great find, you did nothing wrong in buying as many as you could. Most likely there was no one on the island who would have paid $7 apiece for them, so even if the locals knew they were worth more would have done them no good. Attitude, perception, superstition, going along with the crowd, and who knows what else created a unique opportunity for you. A similar experience here stateside happened to me with Susan B. Anthony dollars several years back. The clerk at Kmart gave me one as a quarter in change, I told her of the mistake, even showed her where the coin said "one Dollar". She told me "No, they are quarters, we take them as quarters and give them out as quarters, I have 12 more, do you want them as quarters?" It was hard to argue with such adamant stupidity, and naturally I accepted her offer, lunch was free that day. To speculate on the source of the coins for the matter is one thing, and there could well be a very simple, legitimate reason for how they became circulated there. Let us know if you find out how.

    Paul says "Bonaire..."
I got a silver certificate $1 in Bonaire as change when I was there in the late 80s. Yeah, I kept that one.

(Bonaire is the 'B' in the ABCs - Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao)

Thats wild. I think if I found a place where AE's were in circulation I would spend all my time trying to get as many as possible and wouldn't do anything else on my vacation! Something tells me some sort of theft or illegal activity was involved here; like maybe someone robbed a house with a large quantity of AE's and then didn't know what they were so just spent them! Thanks for the article.
